Knights of Malta Chapter No. 50

Brief History

The Chapter was formed and Consecrated in January 1973 following a suggestion of the Provincial Grand Master, Brig. C. B. S. Morley, to accommodate the increasing numbers of Brethren being initiated into Craft Masonry both locally and nationally at that time, as a means of providing a possible extension of Masonic interest for Craft Masons.

Hinckley had always had a strong presence in Mark Masonry as the historical records prove, and had attracted a number of members from the Nuneaton area of Warwickshire just across the A5, and unconfirmed stories prevailed at that time suggested that Hinckley brethren responded in kind by seeking Royal Arch pursuits in the opposite direction, i.e. by attending Chapter there.

The founders of the Chapter were mainly senior members of Leicester HQ Chapters, together with interested Masons from the Hinckley area. The earliest exaltees (new members, afterwards called Companions) were selected from recently qualified Past Masters of the Hinckley Lodges in order to relieve the Leicester companions of their duplicate office duties in Hinckley and Leicester over a protracted period.

The Chapter has always had an excellent membership as Provincial records will show, and its members have gained a fair share of appointments and promotions at all levels.

 Current situation

The Chapter has a current membership of 53 Companions, and meets at the Masonic Hall on the first Thursday in October, December, March and May.  The Installation meeting is held in December. Membership is open to all Master Masons of at least four weeks standing.

The Order of the Holy Royal Arch is the climax of “Pure Antient Freemasonry” and is considered to be the only opportunity for a Master Mason to proceed to the completion of his Masonic knowledge.  It is sometimes known as the “Fourth Degree”.

Any Master Mason wishing to join the Knights of Malta Chapter No 50 should contact the Royal Arch Representative of their own Craft Lodge, or else the Secretary of the Chapter, Companion John Pinkstone.
